After their first win on the road last week, the Illinois Wesleyan women’s soccer team faced the Monmouth Scots on Wednesday, September 10.
The Titans have never lost to Monmouth and kept their record against the Scots a clean 9-0 with Wednesday’s win.
IWU came in hungry and controlled play the entire first half.
Monmouth never got a shot off, which gave sophomore goalkeeper Vanessa Gray an easy job.
Shot after shot from the Titans kept the pressure on, and every attempt got closer to success.
A near goal off the chest of junior forward Ava Mapes was called a handball and only added fuel to the Titans’ fire.
30 minutes in, sophomore wing Liza Wiley gave the team their first goal with an assist from sophomore defender Ellen Dahlquist.
That set the Titans up for two more goals in the last 20 minutes.
First-year midfielder Mackenzie Krieger served up an assist for sophomore midfielder Emily Kunzer for the second goal.
With three seconds left in the half, a shot from senior midfielder Kayley Carew put the Titans up 3-0.
The second half was back and forth. Monmouth rallied to put up some shots, but Gray kept them out of the goal.
The Titans pushed back harder, and sophomore midfielders Taylor Haun and Wiley gave junior midfielder Sophie Lampert the assist for a score.
Not even a minute later, Wiley set Dahlquist up for a goal, giving IWU a 5-0 lead.
Monmouth managed to scrape in a goal with a little less than 30 minutes left of the game.
IWU tightened up, and Monmouth didn’t get a shot off after that. The Titans took the game 5-1.
This win marks IWU’s first home win of the season, after losing their last home game to Washington University on September 2.
With a current record of 2-2, the team hopes to keep their winning streak alive as they hit the road for their next three games.
Their next matchup will be against Wartburg on September 14 in Waverly, Iowa.
The Titans return to Neis Field on September 22 at 7 p.m. to host Dominican for Youth Soccer Night.
