Illinois Wesleyan men’s tennis team hits the road later this week for Kalamazoo, Mich., for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Tournament starting Sept. 27, 2025.
The odds are stacked against the Titans. The team struggled to find their footing in the IWU Invitational two weeks ago–although first-year Truman Raher of Peoria Ill. did finish the weekend 2-0 in No. 7 Singles. The Titans haven’t seen a player or duo outright win the regional since Brian Piotrowski and Brian Sorich of the Titans’ 2012 roster won in doubles, where they later placed fourth in the national competition.
At the helm for Illinois Wesleyan is Head Coach Sam Totten, who returns for his eighth season. Alongside him is three-time All-CCIW selectee and Bloomington resident, senior Ian Turnbull, who earned second-team honors for the third straight season. The co-captain and two-time team MVP posted a record of 9-9 in singles and 8-10 in doubles last season.
Turnbull and senior Ben Vigneri visited the ITA consolation round of 16 last year, falling to the duo of Cole Shifferly and Tharakesh Ashokar from Wabash College, 8-4. Turnbull stumbled in the IWU Invitational, but perhaps his previous experience with ITA play will give him a leg up as he tries to bounce back to end the fall session of his senior season.
The Titans begin the four-day tournament on Saturday, which will wrap up fall play. The spring season and College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play will begin in February.
Tournament results will be posted on iwusports.com upon the completion of the match.
