Opinion: Selena Gomez is the bigger person amidst TikTok brawl

Growing up in the early 2000’s means I have a strong connection with the celebrities from my childhood. Starring in the Disney Channel show, “Wizards of Waverly Place,” all the way to creating her own makeup brand, Rare Beauty, I’ve been a diehard Selena Gomez fan. This is exactly why it hurts to see she’s tangled up in drama on the internet.

The Selena Gomez vs. Hailey Bieber drama has been coating my TikTok For You Page for about a week now. Every day, I am flooded with videos of fans either supporting Gomez to the end of the line or those saying the whole situation has been blown out of proportion. To me, no matter how unnecessary all this drama is, it just proves how humble and wonderful Gomez is.

For context, the feud began in early January when paparazzi photos were leaked of Gomez in a swimsuit in Mexico. Consequently, Bieber and Kendall Jenner posted a Tiktok around the same time lip syncing the words, “And I’m not saying she deserved it, but God’s timing is always right.” Fans immediately took this as shade towards Gomez who was getting body shamed because of her vacation photos. The TikTok has now been deleted by Bieber, but still sparked a fight that is going on even today.

Gomez didn’t respond to the drama until a whole month later and kept it very cordial, commenting, “It’s ok! I don’t let these things get me down! Be nice to everyone! X.” The fight didn’t end there, however.

Towards the end of February, Gomez made a post talking about her eyebrows and Kendall Jenner immediately posted a questionable TikTok about eyebrows including Bieber. Fans also interpreted it as passive aggressive behavior towards Gomez again to which Jenner replied on Tiktok, “this is reaching. no shade towards Selena ever and I didn’t see her eyebrow posts! u guys are making something out of nothing. this is silly.” Gomez then replied, “Agreed @kyliejenner It’s all unnecessary. I’m a fan of Kylie!”

Recently, Selena Gomez announced she was taking a break from social media amongst all the chatter on social media platforms. She said during a TikTok livestream, “I love the way I am I don’t care, I’m big, I’m not, I don’t care. I love who I am. And yeah, I’m gonna be taking a second from social media, because this is a little silly. And I’m 30, I’m too old for this, so…but I love you guys so much!”

Ever since I was a kid, Gomez was one of the only celebrities that was a true role model for young girls. In her Disney show, she was a character that didn’t outrightly embody a traditional feminine personality. She also released a song in 2011 called “Who Says” that screams self love saying, “I’m no beauty queen, I’m just beautiful me.” Gomez is not new to people trying to take her down a peg, and she continues to go forth and not listen to what critics have to say.

The entire situation in my opinion is somewhat silly. A lot of these rumors are originating from Gomez’s past relationship with Bieber’s husband, Justin Bieber in the early 2010s. Some fans say on Tiktok that Haileys attacks stems from their dating history, which would be a reach to assume.

Despite all the rumors, Gomez has been the bigger person throughout all of it. In all of her interactions online before going private, she’s shown nothing but support for the women who may or may not be coming after her. It takes a lot of maturity to be a bigger person especially when every interaction is being watched by the media. If Bieber and Jenner’s actions were truly targeted towards Gomez, they’ll have to try a lot harder because Gomez is in this writer’s opinion, unbreakable.
