Women’s volleyball starts hot at Wash U tournament

IWU’s women’s volleyball found early success at the WashU tournament on Saturday, October 8. The Titans played a doubleheader on Saturday against Illinois College and Luther College, winning both matchups in three sets.

Wesleyan dropped a game against North Park University on Wednesday, October 12. They sit at 2-1 in the tournament.

 

Illinois Wesleyan vs Illinois College – Saturday, October 8

In their matchup against Illinois College, IWU came away with narrow victories in each set. The Titans won their sets 27-25, 25-22 and 25-20. 

Wesleyan tallied 20 more kills than the Illinois College Lady Blues. Junior outside hitter Taylor Herman led the Titans with 16 kills and 33 total attacks. Herman also boasted an impressive 0.333 hitting percentage. 

Junior libero Faith Washko continued her impressive season. She earned 23 digs and seven assists. Fellow junior Courtney Heffren also helped the Titans in earning 12 more digs than the Lady Blues. Heffren tallied 15 digs and six kills. 

Sophomore setter Abby Erdman and junior setter Jordan Pierce earned 21 and 16 assists, respectively. The pair boasted a commanding performance that helped the Titans garner 19 more assists than their opponents.

 

Illinois Wesleyan vs Luther College – Saturday, October 8

The Titans stayed undefeated in the WashU tournament in a 3-0 victory against the Luther College Norse. Wesleyan outscored their opponent by 20 points across the three sets.

The win was a true team effort on the offensive side. Taylor Herman led the Titans once again with 12 kills. First-year outside hitter Taylor French was close behind Herman tallying nine kills while sophomore middle hitter Morgan Harrington earned eight.

Junior middle hitters Taylor Babec and Ellie Eager contributed to the offense with seven and six kills, respectively. 

The Titans boasted an impressive 0.296 hitting percentage compared to the 0.143 by Luther College. 

IWU was also a defensive powerhouse in their game against Luther. They tallied 43 more digs than the Norse, led by impressive 15-dig performances from Taylor Herman and Faith Washko.

 

Illinois Wesleyan vs North Park – Wednesday, October 12

The Titans dropped their first in-conference game of the WashU tournament on Wednesday, moving to 2-3 in the CCIW. IWU fought to the end in a 3-1 set loss to the North Park Vikings. 

After losing the first set 25-15, the Titans bounced back and won the second set 25-14. Despite their valiant effort, IWU lost the next two sets 25-20 and 25-21.

Taylor French posted a strong performance of 15 kills. Senior right side Dana Kizkowski also made vast contributions to the offense, earning nine kills.

The Titans’ offense faltered in their hitting percentage, mustering a 0.091 to the Vikings’ 0.141.

Abby Erdman posted another 16 assists in a solid effort with Jordan Pierce close behind earning 15. 

IWU looks to bounce back in their last game of the WashU tournament in a CCIW matchup against Elmhurst University on Wednesday, October 19.
