On Monday, September 29, the Hart Career Center is hosting its annual Fall Job & Internship Fair at Shirk Center from 4-7 p.m.
Ann Harding and Warren Kistner of the Career Center have been visiting classes throughout the last week to encourage students to attend.
The Career Center “hosts four job fairs a semester,” Harding said. The first job fair of the semester took place in Young Main Lounge on September 9, specifically for students studying accounting and finance.
The Argus reached out to the Hart Career Center to get their take on why the career fair is important for students.
“The Job & Internship Fair provides students the opportunity to make personal contact with employers in a variety of fields. With so many aspects of job/internship searching feeling very impersonal with online applications, any opportunity to directly connect with individuals central to the hiring process is a win,” Kistner said.
The fair isn’t just for upperclassmen. “For our younger students, the fair also provides the opportunity to learn about opportunities, so it is an educational event as much as a recruitment event,” Kistner said.
There are currently 70 businesses from the greater Chicago area scheduled to attend. IWU alumni in attendance with the companies will have special name tags so that students know they’re speaking with someone who was once in the same shoes as them.
“The Hart Career Center also works to engage IWU alumni at our career fairs. In these situations you have the opportunity to connect with individuals who shared your Titan experience,” Kistner said.
The job fair is also helpful for students who are unsure about their career plans after leaving IWU.
“There is uncertainty about the job market this year, and this elevates the need for students to take advantage of all opportunities to advance their careers,” Kistner said.
