Volleyball is a game of quick decisions and teamwork, and each player has a specific role to play. Whether you’re on the court or watching from the sidelines, knowing the positions helps you understand how the game flows.

Setter: Often called the “quarterback” of the team, the setter runs offense. Players like sophomores Cael Whitchurch and Ethan Kuziela—their job is to receive the second touch of the ball and deliver a clean set to a hitter. A good setter needs quick hands, sharp court vision and strong communication.

The Outside Hitter (or Left Side Hitter): The primary attackers on the team. Players like junior Bryce Williams shine in this role, taking powerful swings from the left side of the court. Outside hitters are also involved in passing the ball and defense, making them one of the most versatile positions.

Opposite Hitter (or Right Side Hitter):  Key for both offense and blocking. Opposite hitters like Dylan McKeon attack positioned from the right side of the net. They send powerful attacks and play a key role in blocking the opponents outside hitter.

Middle Blocker: Positioned in the center of the net, the middle blocker is a defensive wall. They are responsible for reading the opponent’s moves and going up for blocks. They’re also involved in quick hits and must have explosive and fast speed.

Defensive Specialist: For example Senior Raegan Watts, these players fill in for a specific skill. A defensive specialist focuses on back-row defense and passing.

Libero: The most unique role. Players like Kannyn Boyd and Alysa Lawton, wearing a different color jersey, the libero is a specialized defensive player who can substitute freely for back-row players. They are not allowed to play in the front row nor directly play offense.

To the naked eye, volleyball looks like a bunch of yelling, smacking balls around and grunting. But it’s a sport that relies on high skill and team synergy, so come to IWU’s games and support all our hardworking players.

Women’s volleyball plays conference rival Carroll University on Oct. 29 at Shirk Center at 7 p.m. Men’s volleyball’s tips off next year, with their first home tournament on Jan. 24, 2026 against Aurora University.
