In the ever-evolving world of competitive gaming, one student at Illinois Wesleyan University is making waves, proving that dedication, teamwork, and a love for gaming can pave the way to success.

Luiz Bossetto ‘26, a Computer Science major and international student from Brazil,  tells of his journey into the world of competitive esports, which has been nothing short of inspiring.

Building Bonds Beyond the Screen

Bossetto’s venture into competitive gaming began when he received an invitation from his close friend and team captain, Thomas McCormick, during his freshman year’s fall semester. Initially hesitant, Bossetto decided to give it a shot, despite his limited knowledge of the popular game, League of Legends. Little did he know that this decision would open up a world of possibilities and lead to profound personal growth.

“I am surrounded by people whom I consider more than teammates, and who can teach me something new every day. To me, this is what makes being a part of the team so special,” he said.

A Team that Nurtures Growth

Bossetto’s initial apprehensions about joining the team quickly faded as he discovered the unwavering support of his teammates. Their willingness to impart knowledge and their commitment to collective improvement impressed him.

“I don’t regret making this decision. We are improving, and moving further and further as a team, and I am very proud of each one of them,” Bossetto said.

Competing on the Collegiate Stage

Bossetto’s journey into the world of competitive gaming hasn’t been confined to casual play. In his freshman year at IWU, he proudly represented his university in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), an annual competition that draws competitive gamers from across the nation. This year, his team is gearing up for another season of the ECAC, as well as the National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC), with high hopes of making it to the playoffs.

From Super Mario to League of Legends

Bossetto’s passion for gaming traces back to his childhood when his father introduced him to the world of video games with Super Mario Bros at the tender age of six. Since then, he’s explored a diverse range of gaming genres, including online shooters, RPGs, and campaign-driven titles. While he thoroughly enjoys League of Legends, his heart lies with campaign games, with the PS4 exclusive Spider-Man game topping his list of favorites.

“What I like the most about campaign games is the story,” he said. “Any game that has a good plot is a great game, no matter what the story is about.”

A Future in Competitive Gaming

As Bossetto continues his journey at IWU, he has ambitious plans for the future. “I have plans to compete for Wesleyan for the next three years,” he said.

However, he maintains a humble perspective when it comes to international competitions. “That’s not something I plan on doing,” Bossetto said.

Bossetto’s story serves as a testament to the opportunities that competitive gaming can offer to dedicated and passionate individuals. With a supportive team by his side and an unquenchable love for gaming, there’s no doubt that Bossetto’s future in the esports world holds the promise of exciting adventures and achievements.
