The Illinois Wesleyan University Women’s volleyball team travelled down to St. Louis, MO this past Friday to take on the Gorlocks of Webster University. Despite a strong overall performance, they let this one slip, falling to 4-6 overall on the season.
The Gorlocks improved to an even 4-4 with the victory.
Senior Maddie Greybar let IWU on the evening with 14 kills and 12 digs while first-year Kyleigh Block added 13 kills and eight digs of her own.
Block, a 5’9 first-year from Deer Creek, IL, has made a name for herself so far this season, leading the team with 110 overall points. Block also leads the team in kills and points per set with 100 and 3.06, respectively.
Other key contributors in the Webster match were sophomore Colleen Rynne and first-year Nicole Bing. Rynne added 31 assists while Bing added 11 assists and 11 defensive digs.
First-year Maisy Bowden contributed five kills and a team high of four blocks. Comparatively in the four sets played, IWU had 48 kills, 19 errors and 173 kill attempts (.168 hitting percentage) while Webster had 43 kills and 15 hours in only 125 kills attempts (.224 hitting percentage).
Tough matches like these may sting for the Titans right now, but are sure to prove beneficial as the season progresses, especially in conference play.
The latest DIII women’s volleyball rankings had four CCIW teams either ranked in the top 25 or listed under honorable mention.
The Titans will play their final tune up games before conference this upcoming weekend in the Chevrolet Volleyball Class II, hosted once against at the Shirk Center here in Bloomington, IL.
They will take on Aurora University at 3:30 p.m. and Monmouth College at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, followed by Anderson University at 10:00 a.m. and Dominican University at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
