French, Washko, steal show at Wesleyan Classic II

IWU’s women’s volleyball team went 2-1 to start the Illinois Wesleyan Classic II over the weekend of September 23. First-year Taylor French and Junior Faith Washko both took home CCIW Player of the Week honors in their dominant performances.

French totaled 44 kills over the weekend on an even 100 total attacks. She led the Titans in kills in each of their games this weekend averaging four kills per set. The first-year outside hitter also tallied up 21 digs.

Washko was a defensive presence all weekend for the Green and White. She totaled 65 digs across 11 sets, giving her an average of 5.9 digs per set. 

The Titans started their weekend with a huge upset win over number six ranked Washington University in St. Louis. Wesleyan outscored the top ten team 75-49 over four sets. 

IWU scored 14 aces in their matchup, double that of their opponents. They also found strength in teamwork with 52 of their 94 points coming from assists.

Wesleyan continued their success in their second game of the weekend against the Heidelberg University Student Princes. The princes were dethroned in a 3-0 set win for the Titans. 

The Green and White outscored their opponents by 25 in the three set rout. The team also boasted a 0.231 hitting percentage, a stat far above the Student Princes’ 0.109.’

The Titans finished off their weekend with a heart wrenching 3-1 set loss against number 15 ranked UW-Whitewater.

Wesleyan struggled to keep up their performance in their last game of the weekend with just a 0.099 hitting percentage across the four sets.

IWU looks to bounce back and stay undefeated in the CCIW on Friday, September 30 at Augustana College before traveling to Mt. Vernon to play in the Cornell Triangular over the rest of the weekend.
