Grammys slapped slightly harder than Oscars

The Grammys are a jam-packed night full of the biggest awards, best looks and worst outfits. This year’s Grammys were no different, but host Trevor Noah was a little nervous about repeating any events from recent award shows. “We’re going to be keeping people’s names out of our mouths,” Noah said in an early monologue.

Silk Sonic had a clean sweep last Sunday. The Silk Sonic duo, which consists of  Anderson .Paak and Bruno Mars, released their debut album in November of 2021. Silk Sonic won record of the year, song of the year, best R&B performance and best R&B song. Since Silk Sonic stepped on the music scene, they have been nothing but fan favorites.

Olivia Rodrigo was another name that everyone was listening for this year. With seven first-time nominations, Rodrigo made her Grammy performance debut and took home three awards —  pop solo performance, pop vocal album and best new artist. Best new artist is usually a heated category for passionate fans and Rodrigo’s tearful acceptance speech verified her status as everyone’s favorite new star.

Many were surprised by the outcome of Justin Bieber’s night. Bieber stopped his tour and performed this year at the Grammys. He was nominated for eight Grammys and did not win any of them. His most recent album, “Justice,” performed well on the charts, but was not well-received by the recording academy.

While music is technically the focus of the Grammys, the red carpet has become just as important. Celebrities’ outfit choices have become a crucial part of the award show itself. One of the best looks of the night was SZA in vintage Jean Paul Gaultier and crutches due to a surprise broken ankle. Her tulle, floral dress was perfectly tailored and looked stunning on stage to accept her shared award with Doja Cat for best pop duo/group performance.

When Dua Lipa and Megan Thee Stallion presented the award for best new artist, they were wearing the exact same Versace outfits. The duo were joined on stage by designer Donatella Versace. This bit was a tribute to a moment from the 1998 MTV Music Awards when Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey wore the same dress.

Another amazing look was Giveon in Chanel. This sparkly black jacket and pants duo may not seem crazy, but Chanel really pulled this one off. The jacket is in Chanel’s signature style in the best way. The necklaces, however, did almost ruin the look.

Megan Thee Stallion’s outfit while presenting was among the fan favorites. Her animal print Roberto Cavalli dress on the carpet was one of the least popular looks of the night. Animal print is ugly and should never be worn on a red carpet, especially the Grammys.

While the Grammys were entertaining, at the end of the day, they’re still just an award show. It was a three-and-a-half hour show and only nine awards were presented on live television. At least the fashion made the ceremony nice to look at.
