Titan’s explosive offense stuns Carthage

The Illinois Wesleyan baseball team played and won their first conference game on Sunday, April 3. In a 23-1 statement win over Carthage College, the Titans scored seven runs in three different innings. The win helped the Titans improve to a competitive 10-8 overall record on the season.

In a great team effort, junior Jalen Ping stood out among the Titans. Ping went 2-3 at the plate with a huge double. Ping’s sac fly added to his impressive four RBI total on the day. With his performance against Carthage, Ping improved to 7-8 over his last two games, earning him a spot on the D3baseball.com’s Team of the Week.

The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin also took note of Ping’s performance and awarded him the second CCIW Hitter of the Week award of his career at IWU.

Seniors Dominic DiLello and Evan Ranneklev also impressed. DiLello finished 3-3 with four runs and Ranneklev went 2-3 from the plate with two RBIs and three runs scored.

IWU’s hot streak ended in home opener

The Titans also hosted their first home game of the 2022 season this week on Tuesday, April 5. After taking an early 2-0 lead after three innings, IWU didn’t manage to outpace North Central’s 9-1 run over the last six innings.

The Titans’ bats fell short all night with no extra-base hits. Senior Dominic DiLello managed to go 1-3 from the plate with a walk. DiLello scored one of IWU’s three runs as well.

Senior Jared Mutter gave his best efforts to the team. Mutter drew two walks, drove in one run and stole a base.

Ping and the entire baseball team look to bounce back when they travel to Elmhurst College on Saturday, April 9. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
