Following a narrow home-opening win last week, the Green and White extended their streak with a dominant victory over Blackburn College on Sunday, September 8.
The Titans took Neis Field at 3:30 pm, but it did not take them long to take control of the game. Sophomore Faheem Mujahid scored the first goal off an assist by senior Devyn Kennedy only four minutes into the game. The Blackburn defense stalled the Titan’s offense until 37 minutes into the game, where the Titans scored an additional three goals in the span of only six minutes.
The streak started with Junior Striker Logan Tierny sinking a header off a free kick from Senior Declan Nugent for the first goal of his career. Tierny was only just getting started, as just three minutes later, he would score an assist with a pass to sophomore Ryder Coleman. Tierney finalized his reign of terror with another goal off a pass from junior Lucas Tran to put the Titans up 4-0 to end the first half.
Throughout the game, The Titans had incredible coordination with each other. Their willingness to pass the ball strengthened an offense that had struggled to score in their home opener just a week prior. Mujahid iced the game off an assist from first-year Elsworth McIntosh. The Green and White refused to let anything get in the way of victory, bringing home a massive win, 5-0.
“It was a good game. We took care of business early,” senior captain Will McNulty shared about his team’s dominant performance. “We kept it clean, scored a lot of goals, and we protected home, which is important to us.”
Coach Kyle Schauls spoke with Argus staff after the game and was pleased with the team’s turnaround in the last three games. “We have made some good progress early in the season. [Against Blackburn,] we simply wanted to focus on making sure our shots were on frame, and I believe that is what led to more balls going into the back of the net. We also did a good job of turning our high-pressing defensive style into good offensive scoring opportunities. Coach Schauls brought the Titans to the CCIW championship last year, where they made history by bringing home the program’s first-ever CCIW title.
“We are very focused on our day-to-day growth and improvement and taking one game at a time as we go through the season. “The goal for this season (and every season) is to play for as long as possible into the CCIW tournament and NCAA tournament. We have so much fun competing and playing with this team that we just want to keep things going as long as possible.”
The Green and White may have started their season slow, but their foot is finally off the brakes. The Titans face Monmouth College at home at Neis Field on Wednesday, September 18, at 7 pm.
