Need date ideas? Here’s a few simple activities to do as a couple

I don’t know if I’ve ever really been on a date. When my boyfriend and I started dating last year, we took a more nontraditional approach because we never went out on formal dates. This isn’t to say we didn’t spend time together. Rather, we bypassed the awkward phase of dating where couples try to present versions of themselves that aren’t genuine. They might share surface-level information until they find some mutual interest, only to start over with their authentic selves.

Dating can be complicated, but it doesn’t have to be. Couples often want to go out and spend time together, but they struggle to come up with activities to do that break the ice. They tend  to fall into a routine where they do the same thing each time, visit the same restaurant and discuss the same “safe” topics.

I want to encourage you to break this cycle with some new ideas on how to enhance your dating experience. Finding pastimes can be particularly challenging in certain seasons, such as winter, when staying inside is often more appealing. With that in mind, here’s a list of date ideas suitable for all seasons, especially when outdoor activities may be limited:

1. Download a couples’ video game and play together. “It Takes Two” is a great option that my boyfriend and I have enjoyed.

2. Catch a movie at Marcus Theaters or AMC. There are some fantastic movies out now, and more coming soon3. Work out together or take a fitness class at a nearby gym, like the Shirk Center, which is not far from your dorm.

4. Pick a book and take turns reading it together.

5. Cuddle up for a movie marathon.

6. Cook together and prepare some delicious food in the dorm kitchen.

7. Play a board game or card game while enjoying your favorite music in the background.

8. Grab your laptops and head to the nearest Starbucks to study together over a cup of coffee or tea.

9. Indulge in a pint of ice cream from Dugout while enjoying some creative crafts in your dorm (e.g., painting, drawing, beading, etc.).

10. Attend a campus performance featuring the choir or theater groups.

11. Go to a sporting event together.

12. Teach each other a new skill.

These ideas should help keep things fresh and enjoyable as you continue to explore your relationship!
