Softball extends winning streak to 11 after Wisconsin trip

The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team continues their undefeated streak in conference play with four road wins in Wisconsin and bumped their winning streak to 11.

The Titans traveled up to Kenosha on Friday, April 14 for a doubleheader against Carthage College.

The senior pitching duo of Nina Mardjetko and Natalie Grubczak led the Titans at the circle. Two strong pitching performances allowed the Titans to win both games with a combined score of 17-7. Both Mardjetko and Grubczak registered complete games combining for 11 strikeouts in their outings.

Sophomores Ava Khoury and Jen Kuhn paced the Titans offensively against Carthage with a barrage of hits.

Khoury homered for the seventh time this season as she ended the two-game series 5-7. Kuhn followed right behind going 4-7 and adding five runs of her own.

A pair of games which significantly raised the confidence of the Titans as the next day they went on to travel to Waukesha for a doubleheader against Carroll College.

An extra-innings contest for the top of the doubleheader saw the Titans defeat Carroll in a dramatic fashion as they won 3-2 in the ninth inning.

Junior Megan Fontanetta brought in fellow third-year Maya Black with a two-out RBI single to put the Titans up in the top of the ninth inning.

Continuing her recent dominance at the circle was Mardjetko as she got the start and pitched a complete nine-inning game recording her eighth win in a row.

The final game of the Wisconsin stretch saw the Titans trailing 1-0 early into the matchup as freshman Caroline Gretchel pitched her career conference game.

Offensively the Titans were paced by junior Bailey Turner as she went 6-6 on the series against Carthage. Turner was awarded CCIW Hitter of The Week as she hit a hefty .538 with seven hits in 13 at-bats, scoring four runs, driving in two, and ripping two doubles.

Gretchel picked up her first career win as she struck out six batters in six innings of work.

The Titans sit in second of the CCIW with a 6-0 conference record only behind Millikin University who sports an 8-0 record.

The Green and White look to continue their winning ways as they travel up to Wisconsin once again for a doubleheader against non-conference foes UW-Whitewater on Sunday, April 23.
