Titan’s weekly recap: soccer makes history, football wins

Men’s Soccer

The Illinois Wesleyan University men’s soccer team made school history after securing a 2-0 victory against lake Forest College on Sept. 25, extending their win streak to six and improving their record to o6-0-1, their greatest start in program history.

Sophomore striker Ryder Coleman was instrumental int he win, scoring both goals, while goalkeeper junior Sam Kedzior achieved his sixth shutout of the season.

With this victory, Illinois Wesleyan matched its total wins from the previous three seasons and marked the second-longest win streak in program history since 2018.

the win dropped Lake Forest’s records to 1-6-2.

Illinois Wesleyan’s next challenge is Wheaton College on Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. at Joe Bean Stadium.

Football

In their first shutout since 2022, the Titan football team scored 35-0 in their 2024 home opener at Tucci Stadium against the Carthage Firebirds on Sept. 28, 2024.

The Titans added 7 points tot he scoreboard during each quarter, adding 14 in the third quarter thanks to an additional touchdown scored by running back Danny Kent, his second of the game.

The Green and White ran for 206 rushing yards during this game, holding their opponents to only 32 rush yards.

Quarterback Dermot Smith threw for 144 yards, two touchdowns, while also running another in himself.

Additionally, the Titans debuted their new state-of-the-art Nevco score and video boards prior to the game, made possible by generous donations by a number of alumni.

The Titans travel to McCully Stadium to face the Wheaton Thunder on Oct. 12, 2024.

Women’s Tennis

The women’s tennis team faced the Concordia Chicago Cougars at Evergreen Racquet Club on Monday, Sept. 30, 2024, securing a clean sweep.

This non-conference meet brought the team their second consecutive win after defeating Elmhurst the week before, and boosted the Titans’ record to 5-2.

In the doubles round, top first-year pair Gabi Lipske and Katie Van Heuklon held their No. 1 position with a 6-2 doubles win, Lipske’s fifth doubles win this season. Sophomore and senior pair, Olivia Bell and Kate Christian swept the No. 2. spot 6-0.

Sophomore Carly Edwards and first-year Angela Zatloka took care of business and finished the doubles slate with a 6-3 victory.

In singles, the green and White kept their foot ont eh gas. Sophomore Amber Erlich secured the No. 1 singles spot with 6-0, 6-1 wins.

Lipske defended the second court copy, going 6-0 in both sets. Ven Heuklon fought a hard battle int he No. 3 spot and ultimately prevailed with a 6-2, 6-4 win.

Christian secured a 6-2, 6-0 victory in the No. 4 spot, Edwards won 6-2, 6-3 in No. 5 and Zatloka took home a win 6-0, 6-3 at No. 6.

This sweep over the Cougars secured Illinois Wesleyan’s fifth win of the season. With the win, women’s tennis closes in on preserving their beset season record in over ten years.

The team will hopefully maintain their momentum as they travel to Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Oct. 5, and Carroll University in Waukesha, Wisconsin, on Oct. 6.
