The Illinois Wesleyan Women’s Basketball Team overwhelmed Carroll University as they won 78-55 on Saturday, Feb. 4 in the annual PinkZone game.
The ladies moved up to a 13-9 record (8-5 in the CCIW) after winning big at home. With the W in the column, the Titans clinched a spot in the CCIW post-season tournament.
Five players score in double-figures
Leading off the team in scoring was freshman guard Sawyer White who had herself a career night dropping 19 points and six steals. White also went on to fill the stat sheet as she recorded seven rebounds and four assists.
White was voted CCIW Player of the Week for the first time in her career. She joins sophomore Lauren Huber as the two lady Titans to receive the league’s weekly honor.
Huber tallied right behind as she recorded 18 points of her own. The sophomore guard also went on to clean the boards as she had a team-high eight rebounds, three of which were on the offensive side leading to eight second-chance points.
Defensively, Huber contributed with an outstanding seven steals as the Titans went on to hold a commanding lead in points off turnovers 27-6.
Carroll committed a total of 29 turnovers compared to the Titan’s 14.
Sophomore Kate Palmer added 15 points, aided by a trio of three-pointers and shooting 100 percent from the charity stripe.
Junior Caite Knutson and freshman Laura Mahlum dropped 11 and 10 points respectively rounding out the double-digit Titan scorers.
An overall dominant offensive performance saw the Titans pass around the ball and end up with 20 assists.
Senior Katelyn Heller dished out a game-high seven assists as she facilitated the floor for the Green and White.
In the opening quarter, the Titans went on to score a quick four points in the first 20 seconds. Capitalizing off a quick start they would go up by 14 going into halftime as the scoreboard read 46-32.
The Titans would go on a 9-0 scoring run coming out of the break and would go up by as many as 29 points in the third quarter.
IWU would go on to win in a tremendous fashion as the final score was 78-55 never letting Carroll take the lead.
Shortly after the game, White went on to say “Second half of the season and we’re playing so well, we as a team talk about how we’re on an upward trend and I think it’s so true.
“We’ve been sharing the ball very well as you saw tonight, playing together as a unit, it’s really been great”.
The Titans look to continue their winning streak as they travel to Naperville, ILL on Saturday to face off against the North Central Cardinals. The game is set to tip off at 5:00 p.m.
