This week, the Illinois Wesleyan women’s soccer travelled to La Crosse, WI to go toe-to-toe with Wartburg College on September 11 and UW-La Crosse on September 12. In the end, the Titans fell to the Knights 2-0 and to the Eagles 4-0.
First, the Titans took on Wartburg. Already falling behind in the first quarter of the game, the Titans were not ready to go down without a fight. Junior Lauren Shanks led the team with six shots total and three on goal. Freshman Halle Lange followed with one shot on goal and two overall. Firing alongside Shanks and Lange were senior Rachel White and freshman Tegan Timerman with one and three shots respectively. Wesleyan was able to keep Wartburg vigilant by outshooting them 16-13, but could not manage to scrape out a victory.
Women’s soccer remained in Wisconsin on September 12, to face off against the UW-La Crosse. Within minutes, the Titans were already down by one with the Eagles taking the field by storm. Ultimately the Titans lost 4-0, but not before kicking into action.
Senior Caelyn Steffens set the match-high with three shots on goal out of four, followed by senior Anny Mitra and sophomore Izzy Mitra with one out of two shots landing on goal. White was also able to make it into the box with one shot on goal. At the end of the day, UW-La Crosse had to make nine saves. Despite these opportunities, UWL dominated the pitch.
The Titans were able to crush Simpson College 4-3 at Neis Stadium in Bloomington, IL on September 1 but haven’t seemed to recover their winning stride yet. After this week, the Titan’s stand at 1-4, while UW-La Crosse continues 4-0.
“The games were tough this week,” junior Riley Haug said, “But we won’t let it get the best of us. The season isn’t over and these girls are tough. I can’t wait to see where we go from here.”
The Titans have a chance to get back in action on September 18 at 5:00pm when they combat Loras College in Dubuque, IA.
