Illinois Wesleyan University’s men’s golf team secured an impressive second-place finish at the Golfweek October Classic in Sandestin, Fla., on Tuesday, Oct. 17. Three Titans earned spots in the top 20 individually during this competitive showcase of skill and teamwork.
Navigating the Raven Golf Club’s challenging course, the Titans posted a final round score of 291, accumulating a 54-hole total of 860 (279-290-291). The top honor went to No. 2 Methodist, securing victory with a total of 843 and a final round score of 277. Lynchburg, trailing the Titans by a single stroke, claimed third place at 861 (291-292-278). Notably, No. 1 Emory and fifth-ranked Carnegie Mellon secured fourth and fifth places, respectively. Methodist’s Cameron Cappuzzo earned the coveted medalist honors with rounds of 66, 71, and 66, concluding with a total score of 203.
Leading the Titans was junior Quinn Clifford (Chicago, Ill.-Brother Rice), securing eighth place with a total score of 213 (66-73-74). Meanwhile, sophomore Juney Bai (Mokena, Ill.-Lincoln-Way Central) made an impressive climb, tying for ninth with an even-par 71 and accumulating a total of 214 (69-74-71).
The standout performance came from fifth-year player Bobby Beaubien (Barrington, Ill.-Barrington), who claimed a share of 20th. Beaubien exhibited skill and determination, birdying four of his last eight holes to finish the day even and complete the three-day event with a total score of 216 (70-75-71).
Looking forward, the Titans are gearing up for the three-day NCAA Division III Preview in Las Vegas, Nev., from Sunday to Tuesday, Oct. 29-31, at Boulder Creek Country Club. Marking IWU’s final fall event, this tournament will provide an early look at the site of the 2024 NCAA Division III Championship.
