The Illinois Wesleyan men’s golf team can talk the talk and walk the walk. After Coach Ott promised Argus staff last week that his golf team would confidently win the Wabash Invite, the team strolled in and took the contest with ease.
Seven Titans appeared in the top ten, with senior Griffin Pohl taking first place with a 209 in the 54-hole tournament at par-72, 6904-yard Broadmoor Country Club. Junior Aidan Healy finished behind Pohl in second with a 212.
The Titans’ A-team finished the tournament with an 854, with the Titans’ B-team placing runner-up at 876. College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin rival Milkin finished in third place with 897, 43 strokes behind the Titans’ A-team.
“I left a couple of shots on the course but played solid otherwise. We have played great so far this season,” first-year Pablo Castro said. Pablo tied for third in individual finish at Wabash. “Our team is in a state where we should want to win every tournament we go to.”
“When a B team finishes in second place and basically laps the entire field of A teams, it says a lot about how much depth we have,” Coach Jim Ott said.
Coach Ott also discussed how the team is feeling ahead of their final fall tournament, the Golfweek Invite, which will be hosted at Sandestin Golf Resort in Sandestin, Fla.
“Seven of the top ten ranked DIII teams in the country will be playing, so we will need to play with a high level of confidence and poise, stay in the present and control what we can,” Ott said. “If we do that, we’ll be fine. It is so important to sincerely believe you are the best player in the tournament when you step up to the first tee. Golf is a game of confidence, and the team is oozing with confidence right now.”
The Titans wrap up their Fall Season at the three-day invite in Sandestin starting Oct. 13. Live scoreboard for the event can be found on the scoreboard.clippd website.
