Titan Green Over Everything: the Tommy Awards

The 14th annual Tommy Awards took place on Monday, April 14th at the Shirk Center. 

The men’s tennis team earned the honor of “Academic Team of the Year” for highest overall grade-point average. Individual athletes earned awards for having the highest grade-point averages on their teams. These student-athletes are:

Men’s Lacrosse: Michael Rocco

Women’s Lacrosse: Avery Setzler

Men’s Soccer: Matthew Perchik and Sam Kedzior

Women’s Soccer: Jenna Gravitt

Softball: Kennady Estes

Men’s Swimming & Diving: Carter Dilger

Women’s Swimming & Diving: Alexa Starkey

Men’s Tennis: Chase Tomecki

Men’s Wrestling: Leonardo Reyes

Griffin Pohl of the men’s golf team and track and field triple jumper Imani Ogunribido took home Best Championship Performance awards. Pohl set IWU records for lowest single round and lowest total at an NCAA championship. Ogunribido placed sixth in the triple jump at the NCAA Division III outdoor championship in May 2024, and captured first-team All-American status after doing so.

Gianna Certa, a pitcher on the softball team, was named Breakthrough Athlete of the Year. Improving her pitching game, she went from pitching 14% of the team’s total innings in 2023, to 53% of innings in 2024. 

Josh Fridman from men’s basketball and Hailey Milgazo from softball received Rookie of the Year honors. Fridman earned the CCIW First-Year Student Athlete of the Year title, in addition to D3hoops National Rookie of the year. He led his team in three-pointers made and free throw percentage. Milgazo led her team with a .460 batting average, ranking 32nd in the nation for hits.

Best Clutch Performance awards were handed to men’s basketball’s Karlo Colak and softball’s third baseman Casey Wissmiller.

Best Game honors went to women’s volleyball for their win over Millikin in the CCIW Tournament Championship match, and men’s golf for their performance in their CCIW Championship. 

Women’s volleyball was voted the Do Good Now Award winner for their involvement in community service in our Bloomington-Normal community throughout the year. Trey Bazzell is the recipient of the Fightin’ Titan Award after finding the courage to stand and fight through the loss of his younger brother in 2023. 

The highest honor a student could earn at the Tommy Award is “Athlete of the Year” award. Evan Lowder from track and field earned male athlete of the year and Lauren Huber from women’s basketball won female athlete of the year. 

This honor followed Huber’s recognition of the Best Record-Breaking Performance for her performance against Augustana College that broke the school record for career scoring points.
